Mermaid Parade: Signs and Numerology

It's hard to take good pictures of an event where everybody and their uncle has a camera. It was always the case, but back before digital cameras became populor, nobody had the time or energy to scan all their pics onto the web. It's different now, of course, as a quick scan on flickr brings up over 2,000 mermaid parade pictures.

The parade was an abject failure, photography-wise. And not just because I was late. I had wanted to close the distance, to get closer both physically and emotionally to my subjects. To actually talk to them and get a sense of their stories before I actually pressed the shutter. And once again, my shyness prevented that. These pics were OK, but they could have been a lot better.
